Mercer County Points of Pride

- Emphasizing programming for the entire family, the Healthier Bluefield
Families project provides information on nutrition, health, and safety. More
than 300 families participate in this yearlong project.
- Participants in the Dining with Diabetes cooking schools increase their
knowledge of healthy food choices and become more self-confident in preparing
meals for people with diabetes. In Mercer County, 60 people participated in
the cooking schools.
- The 100 members of Mercer County’s eight Community Educational Outreach
Service clubs conduct many service projects.
- Last year, the Adult Family Nutrition Program reached 239 limited-resource
county families with information on nutrition, food safety, and money management.
Forty-seven volunteers helped with this program.
- For more than 100 years, 4-H has helped youths learn and grow while having
fun! Mercer County 4-H serves about 1,000 youths annually with the help of
140 volunteers.
- Energy Express, a six-week reading program, improves children’s reading
scores. This collaborative program reaches more than 200 youths each summer.
