Mineral County Points of Pride

- A weekly Farmers Market was held July through October for area growers marketing
fresh produce. WVU Extension, the Chamber of Commerce, WIC, and the Committee
on Aging worked closely on this successful project.
- Commercial vegetable growers received educational training through 3 dinner
meetings co-sponsored with the Potomac Headwater RC&D and a grant from USDA's
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program.
- Through 14 clubs led by 81 volunteers, 255 4-H members learn leadership,
citizenship, and communication skills.
- Community Educational Outreach Service members gain leadership experience
in 14 clubs.
- Three livestock and forage seminars had an average attendance of 119 producers
interested in learning new methods and farming techniques.
- The six-week Energy Express summer reading program promoted school success
for 218 elementary-school-age children last year.
- USDA agencies and farmers supported Extension in providing farm tours and
school demonstrations about agriculture to 850 elementary and preschool children.
- 4-H'ers exhibited 260 projects at the Mineral County Fair. The livestock
sale brought in more than $58,000.
- 4-H teens teach tobacco prevention techniques to 230 youths each year.
The 4-H teen leaders formed a Smack Down on Tobacco (S-dot) chapter to promote
a smoke-free lifestyle.
- Dining with Diabetes cooking schools give useful information to 60 people.
