Mingo County Points of Pride

- Mingo County had the state’s largest Energy Express program, with five sites
and 285 participants. This summer reading initiative provided 29,000 educational
contact hours, 20,500 nutritious meals, 57 new jobs, 6,200 hours of community
service, and 1,700 take-home books.
- Local 4-H clubs taught nearly 600 students about money management, recycling,
and substance abuse prevention. 4-H camps also provided more than 140 campers
with information about careers, decision making, peer pressure, and the environment.
- Extension staff, in conjunction with the Mingo County Board of Education,
conducted a career fair for eighth-graders. Each student received information
about job duties, educational requirements, employment outlook, and pay.
- Extension staff obtained grant funding for the town of Matewan to create
a reenactment of the Matewan Massacre.
- This year, the Extension office began WV CARES, a program designed to increase
the number of students who attend college.
- Extension offers educational assistance for owners of existing businesses
or individuals interested in starting a business.
- Extension outreach staff provided nutrition training to 84 needy families
through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program.
