Monongalia County Points of Pride

- Change continued in Monongalia County’s WVU Extension Office during 1999.
We filled positions in agriculture, 4-H, “Be Smart! Eat Smart!” program, and
secretarial assistance.
- The second year of the Dining with Diabetes program offered three sessions
and class reunions to 100 individuals.
- The growing Monongalia County 4-H Program now has 255 members in 14 traditional
community clubs. Nontraditional members are learning about 4-H through Kaleidoscope,
an after-school care program.
- Extension’s horticultural program was enhanced with the certification of
33 Master Gardeners. These volunteers provided 800 hours of community service
and educational programming valued at $6,400.
- Participants in “Be Smart! Eat Smart!”—a new nutrition education program—meet
in small groups with an Extension nutrition associate; they prepare and share
nutritious foods.
- Extension assisted more than 2,000 citizens with horticulture, pest, disease
control, and drought questions.
- The 4-H Junior Leaders have adopted the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention
and Awareness Program as a yearlong service project.
- Extension coordinated purchases of 355.5 tons of hay for 18 producers, saving
them $8,160.
