Monroe County Points of Pride

- As a member of the Scenic Byways Committee, Agent Graves worked to publish
and distribute a brochure promoting tourism, a long-standing Monroe County
industry.
- A series of workshops and news articles educated farmers about drought management,
dealing with tough times, and beef marketing.
- Community Educational Outreach Service members improved the lives of families
and communities as volunteers in such valuable programs as Breast and Cervical
Cancer Awareness, Dining with Diabetes, and Read Aloud America.
- Agent Redden is developing a grassland management program designed to increase
the pounds of red meat produced per acre while increasing grassland yield
and reducing production costs.
- Monroe County was chosen as a pilot county to implement Children, Youth
and Families At Risk (CYFAR) programs. Youth literacy is the focus of this
state-strengthening grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- Our Monroe County 4-H program and its 36 community, special-interest, and
school clubs teach life skills, enhance self-esteem, and encourage community
service for 585 youths and their 122 adult leaders.
- “A Tough Act to Follow” was the theme for the 1999 county 4-H camp. Thirty-nine
counselors guided the 150 campers. Three teens earned 4-H pins for completing
Charting, a self-exploration program.
