Morgan County Points of Pride

- Some 160 children gained reading and creative thinking skills in Energy
Express, a six-week summer reading and nutrition program at Widmyer and Paw
Paw elementary schools. The children received 14,000 meals and 1,000 take-home
books. Community volunteers helped make the program a success.
- Fifty Master Gardeners provided more than 1,500 hours of community horticultural
service. This 5-year-old program has provided some 175 tri-county gardeners
with intensive horticultural training.
- Local 4-H clubs taught over 400 youths about citizenship, environmental
science, home economics, and sustainable agriculture. The in-school 4-H Cloverbud
program gives all first- and second-graders the opportunity to learn about
earth science and horticulture in the school's garden and compost area.
- The agent taught Bio-Intensive Organic Farming workshops across the region
to more than 900 home and market gardeners. With this method, gardeners can
grow more vegetables on less land. Local research found this method effective
in generating income.
- The Community Educational Outreach Service educates families about safety,
the environment, heritage arts, and cancer prevention.
- Have questions about bugs, alternative crops, composting, water quality,
or soil fertility? Each year, we answer about 500 home gardening questions
and distribute 400 garden calendars.
- Research and educational programs help farmers make good decisions about
farm management, pest control, forestry, and pasture management.
- Local residents learn of Extension programs via our daily radio program
and weekly newspaper column.
