Ohio County Points of Pride

- Agriculture and rural literacy is an important issue because many Americans
do not know where their food and fiber are produced. The Ohio County Farm
Bureau helped "take the farm to the school" during two major Ag Days in local
inner city schools.
- The WVU Ohio County Extension Office coordinates the Ohio County Country
Fair, held in conjunction with Oglebayfest. This annual event attracts more
than 65,000 people.
- Extension coordinated Energy Express, a summer reading and nutrition program,
at Madison and Ritchie schools for students in kindergarten through second
grade. The six-week program is held throughout the state.
- Ohio County's Master Gardeners were certified in cooperation with the Wheeling
Civic Garden Center. Master Gardeners assist with many Extension educational
programs.
- 4-H clubs are a point of pride for the Extension Service. Nine community
4-H clubs offer educational activities to Ohio County youths.
- The WVU Extension Office provided the Family Times newsletter to
parents of 295 Ohio County kindergarten students each month of the school
year. This newsletter engages parents in their children's reading activities.
- Oglebay Park and All-America Selections worked with Extension to plant
an All-America Selections Display Garden. Gardeners received a sample of the
latest All-America Selections winners and information about the plants.
