Pocahontas County Points of Pride

- The Pocahontas County 4-H Youth Development program reaches 215 youths led
60 leaders in 15 community and school clubs. Members participate in educational
projects, community projects, camp, visual presentations, public speaking,
judging contests, poster and photography exhibitions, project fairs, and leadership
training.
- Extension and local agencies organized two Energy Express summer reading
sites, which served 79 elementary-school children. This six-week summer reading
and nutrition program employed 12 college students as mentors. Some 187 people
volunteered nearly 1,700 hours.
- The 87 Community Educational Outreach Service members in five clubs work
to improve their skills in leadership, personal development, nutrition, food
safety, family life, and community service.
- Extension worked with the Pocahontas County Solid Waste Authority to offer
residents low-cost solid waste disposal and recycling.
- Extension uses ultrasound to collect rib eye, back fat, and intramuscular
fat data on yearling bulls and heifers. This valuable information enables
beef seed stock producers to select cattle meeting consumer demands.
- Extension helps local beef producers increase profits through special graded
cattle sales sponsored by the Pocahontas Producers Cooperative Association.
- In 2001, 33 participants from the Green Bank area learned about effective
management of diabetes, food selection, meal planning, and food preparation
through the Dining with Diabetes cooking schools.
