Preston County Points of Pride

- The Preston County 4-H program passed several significant milestones during
the 1999-2000 program year. The county 4-H Foundation passed the $100,000.00
mark in total assets. Each year the 4-H Foundation provides scholarships to
county, state, regional, national, and international 4-H programs, as well
as assistance to outstanding 4-H members to meet their post-secondary educational
objectives. The county was also recognized for an unprecendented ninth year
in a row, as having the largest county delegation at the West Virginia Older
4-H Members Conference. 4-H members were also very well represented at the
fifty-ninth annual Preston County Buckwheat Festival. Over 200 market livestock
projects were exhibited and sold by 4-H members in the Junior Livestock Program,
and approximately $164,000. in sales were earned by 4-H and FFA members.
- The "Be Smart, Eat Smart" nutrition education program in Preston County
has made great progress in this last year. This program designed to teach
basic nutrition concepts to limited resource families, and enrolled 75 persons
in the six classes conducted by Karen Bright, the BSES Outreach Instructor.
The YR 2000 graduation rate was 85% of those taking the class. Class attendance
remains very high as Karen prepares for another progressive year teaching
nutrition and making a difference in the lives she touches.
- Last year Preston County Master Gardeners touched 400 Preston County third
graders. They carried agriculture into the classrooms of each elementary school
in the county. Certified Master Gardeners taught soils and soil fertility,
botany, and plant physiology on a level that 3rd graders could understand.
In June, third graders from two schools were taught to plant in a garden plot
prepared by Master Gardeners. In addition to caring for the plants, they learned
how to use and care for garden tools. The following fall, produce was brought
to the classroom of the new fourth graders so they could see the results of
their labor.
