Raleigh County Points of Pride

- More than 116 limited-resource families participated in the Expanded Food
and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). Eleven pregnant teens participated
in EFNEP's Healthy Moms and Babies program. Some 85 volunteers contributed
more than 400 hours to EFNEP. An agent conducted research and four focus groups
addressing adolescent pregnancy and parenting.
- The Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) sponsored Breast Cancer
Awareness month and promoted literacy projects. CEOS also sponsored the 28th
annual Heritage Quilt Show, provided camp scholarships to 4-H'ers. Ten members
volunteered more than 6,500 hours to community service.
- Extension conducted the Health Fair, Dining with Diabetes cooking school,
and Foot Fair.
- The Southern Bull Test and Evaluation Center evaluated 125 performance-tested
bulls and 130 heifers.
- Raleigh and Summers counties certified 22 people as Master Gardeners; they
volunteered 400 hours to community service.
- Extension conducted peer mediation programs and piloted violence prevention
programs in county schools. There were 128 students at three sites participating
in Energy Express, a summer reading program.
- 4-H has 874 members, 45 clubs, 65 volunteers, 214 youths in summer camps,
and 574 participants in nutrition programs.
- Grassland management research trials tested dry fertilizer impregnated
with herbicides to combat multiflora rose in pastures.
- Seventy-two producers attended two pesticide workshops.
