Summers County Points of Pride

- Extension worked closely with the 4-C Economic Development Authority and
the Summers County Commission to explore potential funding for future industrial,
business, and technology park sites.
- Extension and the City of Hinton facilitated the Summers County 21st Century
Leadership Initiative, a program that develops local leadership capacity.
During 2002, 47 individuals participated in the initiative’s learning
seminars and community projects.
- Extension is facilitating the first year of Summers County’s participation
in the W.Va. Community Collaborative, a premier statewide community development
training program that helps communities address local needs. Fifteen Summers
County residents are involved with this program.
- The county has 350 4-H members in 14 clubs. Last summer, 142 campers and
55 volunteers participated in the residential camp.
- Extension has partnered with community volunteers and business to improve
the county’s 4-H camp, including the construction of new agriculture
facilities.
- The Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) volunteers participate
in the many community projects.
- Seventy-two bulls and 81 heifers on the Southern Bull and Replacement Heifer
Performance Test were sold at the 2002 sale. The 2003 test group consists
of 119 bulls and 98 heifers.
- Research on county farms will help determine the economics of using dry
hay and wrapped haylage for winter feed. This three-year project will compare
various types of growing seasons.
