Tucker County Points of Pride

- The W.Va. Master Gardener program is part of a national program that provides
horticultural training to local citizens for the purpose of developing a cadre
of trained volunteers who can conduct horticulture related service projects
in their communities. The Randolph/Tucker Master Gardener program was begun
in 2000 as a cooperative effort of the Tucker and Randolph County Extension
Offices. Twenty-five residents participated in the training with 22 completing
the program.
- The WVU/Tucker County Extension Office addressed the high incidence of
diabetes in the county by conducting the "Dining with Diabetes" Cooking school.
Forty-two diabetics and caregivers received six hours of instruction which
included basic diabetes education, hands-on demonstration in meal preparation,
and a food tasting session. Ten Tucker County BOE food service workers were
trained as part of the program.
- Providing a unique educational experience in a residential camp setting
is the goal of the local 4-H camping program. 4-H Mini Camp and the annual
all age camp evidenced 99 youth and 25 adult participants.
- Tucker County Master Gardeners received a $1,097.00 grant to purchase and
plant trees in Mill Race Park. They also completely renovated the flowerbeds,
which had been neglected for several years.
- A cooperative effort of the WVU/Tucker and Randolph County Extension Offices
and the area Farm Service Agency sponsored a livestock production dinner meeting,
which evidenced 130 participants. The program promoted animal nutrition and
genetics and will continue with additional programs in 2001.
- WVU Extension continues to support the local community through agent Campbell's
service as a member of the Tucker County Solid Waste Authority, Planning Commission,
and Fair Association.
