Upshur County Points of Pride

- More than 325 youths and adults participated in the 4-H program last year.
Residential camp attracted 127 campers and 44 adult volunteers. Fifteen teen
leaders went on a weekend citizenship trip to Washington, D.C., and 25 participated
in an overnight leadership event.
- The cooking schools for diabetics reached 84 people in Upshur and Lewis
counties. Four local registered dietitians volunteer their time to help with
these schools.
- The 320 Community Educational Outreach Service members participate in service,
leadership training, and state activities.
- The home economics program educates consumers, child care providers and
parents about many issues.
- Extension’s county nutrition outreach instructor taught 54 families
in class sessions.
- The county’s agriculture education programs reach more than 600 clients
with information on lawns, gardens, marketing, production, alternative agriculture,
youth education, pesticide training, and other topics. About 160 people participated
in educational dinner meetings last year.
- A $37,000 grant was obtained for the Upshur County Farmers’ Market,
which moved to a new location. The money was used to build a restroom, finish
the pavilion, and provide publicity. Of the 42 farmers participating, 17 reported
grossing $26,626.
- Upshur County livestock producers benefit economically from the pooling
of feeder calves. This market strategy produced a $46.39 per-head price advantage
over traditionally sold cattle.
