Wayne County Points of Pride

- Wayne County now has its first economic development director as the result
of efforts by local citizens, the Wayne County Commission, and the WVU Wayne
County Extension Office.
- By telephone or face-to-face consultations, Extension faculty provided
gardening information to more than 500 citizens this year. Also, 1,500 garden
calendars were distributed, 50 columns were published in the Wayne County
News, 20 radio spots were aired, and six TV programs on gardening were broadcast.
- The Family Nutrition Program reached 98 county families.
- The Wayne County Cattlemen's group continues to market calves as a group
on the W.Va. Board Sales, earning a higher profit than through traditional
marketing. Extension helps by teaching classes and providing information on
quality improvement.
- Almost 700 youths and adults participated in 4-H activities. The 4-H/Youth
Development Program partnered with Fort Gay Elementary School to implement
an $18,400 Kellogg Foundation Grant that brought Spanish language activities
to the students and surrounding community.
- The Family Nutrition Program's youth nutrition outreach instructor presented
a series of nutrition skill-building sessions to 463 youths through school-enrichment
activities and to 335 youths through special-interest programs. A host of
community collaborators and 54 volunteers assisted.
