Wirt County Points of Pride

- Wirt County’s six community 4-H clubs have 150 members. In 2002, 80
members participated in a fun-filled week of camp.
- Twenty-three farmers and gardeners took advantage of the free soil testing
service, and 500 people requested Extension garden calendars.
- The Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) volunteers lead many
community service projects and have a yearly fund-raising luncheon. Proceeds
go to Camden Clark Hospital for cancer research.
- Energy Express, a summer reading and nutrition program, served 40 children
and received the services of five AmeriCorps mentors, one site coordinator,
one volunteer coordinator, and a host of volunteers.
- Local beef producers take part in the tele-board auction in Buckhannon each
year. This marketing strategy helps producers get the best price for their
livestock.
- Twenty clients took part in a Dining with Diabetes class to learn about
controlling diabetes through diet.
- The Family Nutrition Program helped seven limited-resource families improve
their diets and make better buying decisions.
- The CEOS volunteers provided information on apple butter making and heritage
crafts during Heritage Day at the local elementary school.
- The 4-H camp has a new modern dormitory, thanks to the hard work and dedication
of community volunteers. Other buildings are being erected on the grounds.
