Wood County Points of Pride

- More than 100 families learned to stretch food dollars and eat healthier
diets through the West Virginia Family Nutrition Program in its first 20 months.
- Extension and Wood County Adult Basic Education partnered to conduct career
planning workshops for 31 participants.
- Extension cooperated with 12 national and community organizations to conduct
a Progressive Farmer Safety Day Camp.
- Extension served 526 members in 20 local 4-H clubs in 2001. Also, 498 members
and leaders participated in county and state camping experiences.
- The 50th annual 4-H Leaders Recognition Banquet honored 119 volunteers
having a combined 707 years of service.
- Energy Express served 231 children who on average gained two months in
word identification skills and six months in reading comprehension.
- Extension provides resources on consumer and family issues for local organizations,
including 18 Community Educational Outreach Service clubs having 247 members.
- Six diabetic cooking schools reached 229 participants. A six-month follow-up
showed they increased knowledge and changed behaviors.
- Two 4-H clubs received funds for community service projects from the Wood
County Youth As Resources Board, which gave $13,720 to youth service-learning
projects in 2001.
- The county's Master Gardeners restored the gardens and grounds at the Blennerhassett
home.
