ITALIAN RENAISSANCE ARTISTS
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
- To conduct research using computers and library resources
- To analyze and evaluate information to write a report
- To select a piece of artwork to evaluate and present opinions on the value of the artwork to the Renaissance period
- To create a PowerPoint presentation of chosen artist (background, education, works, etc.)
- To present a product to an audience
- To understand the role of art in the Renaissance period
- To understand the changing style of art in the Renaissance period
GRADE LEVELS:

CLASS PERIODS NEEDED:
- 3 periods on computers and or in library to conduct research on selected artist
- 2 periods to write report
- 3 periods to create PowerPoint
- 2-3 periods to complete presentations
Note: PowerPoint can also be used during Renaissance Fair
MATERIALS:

PROCEDURE:
- Students will use selected websites to pick an artist of the Italian Renaissance to research.
- Students will use computer and library resources to research the selected artist.
- Students will gather information into a report that answers the following:
- Biographical information
- Education
- Picture of artist
- Style and medium of artist
- Major works (photos of works)
- Explanation of why the artist is considered a major influence in Italian Renaissance art
- Documentation of sources
- Students will then use gathered information to put into a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class.
- Students will select his/her favorite work by the artist to explain why it his/her favorite and how the elements of Italian Renaissance are evident in the work.
- Students will turn in written report.
- Students will present PowerPoint during the Renaissance Fair.

PROCEDURE:
1. Students will use selected websites to research Renaissance clothing.
2. Students will choose a Renaissance outfit to create.
3. Students will write a short description of the outfit and answer why, how, where, and when the outfit was worn.
4. Students will use materials from home/community to create a Renaissance outfit.
5. Students will describe and wear the outfit during the Renaissance Fair.
EVALUATION:
1. Daily rubric for individual research time on computer or in library
2. Short report--- 20 points- grammar and spelling, 40 points- necessary information, 10 points- documentation of sources
3. Outfit- 100 points upon completion of product and presentation of product

- 2 days to research/read about the influence of trade and what products were available in various regions
- 1 period to write a short report on a product that was traded and how it influenced Renaissance food choices

- 1 period to meet in small groups to plan for making the recipe
- Time at home to work to make the recipe unless space is available at school
- 1 or more periods to present food during a Renaissance Fair

ITALIAN RENAISSANCE MURALS/MOSAICS
LESSON OUTCOMES:
- To extend knowledge and/or prior knowledge of Italian Renaissance artists from previous lesson on Italian Renaissance artists.
- To use knowledge of an artist to create a piece of art using the artist’s style.
- To work cooperatively in small and large groups.
- To explore one’s creativity.
GRADE LEVELS:
6-8 (adaptable up or down)
CLASS PERIODS NEEDED:
- Students will need to complete the Renaissance artist lessons prior to this lesson. If that lesson is not done, students need to research an artist of the Italian Renaissance period who is known for mosaics or murals.
- Several class periods will be needed to create the actual artwork.
- 1 class period to present final product
MATERIALS:
If students choose to do a mosaic, students will choose material to use in creating the mosaic. Teacher might want to go to a local home supply store to get some materials to use. Let the students use their own creativity to decide what material to use in making the mosaic. If a mural is chosen, you will need paint, large cardboard panels, paintbrushes, drop cloths, and old newspapers.
PROCEDURE:
- Class discussion to discuss murals and mosaics.
- Class discussion to choose to do a mural or mosaic.
- Divide class into small groups.
- Students will work in small groups to divide up work responsibilities.
- If doing murals, small groups will each do a separate panel of the larger work. If doing the mosaic, small groups will work on selected section.
- Final product will be presented during Renaissance Fair.
