LIFE SCIENCES BUILDING

Life Sciences Building July 16, 2002

West Virginia University has redefined the edge of the downtown campus with the creation of a Life Sciences Building that occupies a portion of the old site of Mountaineer Field. The building will be the new home for the Departments of Psychology and Biology.

The first level of the building has accommodations for Animal Quarters, a Herbarium, and building support spaces. The next level houses general purpose classrooms, including a 250-seat auditorium, a 125-seat auditorium and two 60-seat instructional rooms, with access from grade level on the quad side to a glass enclosed interior corridor that serves as a waiting and discharge area for the classrooms.

The next two levels contain Psychology Department administrative areas, teaching labs and research labs, as well as an additional animal holding facility. The upper three floors contain Biology Department administration, teaching labs and research labs. All faculty offices are located on the glass face of the building that fronts the quad and a view of Woodburn Hall. The building is crowned by a six-unit greenhouse serving the Department of Biology.  Utilizing the steeply sloped site as a design element, grade level access is provided at numerous locations, including an easy building pass-through area opposite Grant Avenue. This aspect brings students into the core of the building, thereby fostering interaction between departments and presenting to the general student population an exciting and dynamic environment.
