Swiger Doctoral Fellowship
Arlen G. and Louise Stone Swiger have been special benefactors to West Virginia University in their establishment of this fellowship program through the WVU Foundation. These fellowships are open to students either beginning their doctoral (Ph.D., Ed.D.) study or those in their first year of doctoral study.
The Swiger Doctoral Fellowships are only for U.S. citizens. They provide an annual (August 16th to August 15th) stipend of $20,000 plus remission of tuition. Mandatory special fees A are paid for the fellowship students from the endowment. Students who are awarded fellowships as beginning doctoral students are eligible to renew the awards with a maximum tenure of three years. Applicants most hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and must qualify as a regular graduate in one of WVU's graduate degree programs. Applications for this fellowship must originate in the appropriate graduate program and be recommended (in rank order) by the dean of the college/school. Completed applications are sent from the dean's office to the Office of Graduate Education for evaluation and award by the Swiger Fellowship Review Committee.
All Fellows are required to be full-time, resident students during the academic year. Fellows must remain in good academic standing and are expected to devote full-time to their studies. Swiger Fellows are required to contribute teaching time to support the WVU Honors Program in the candidate's college or be given another similar assignment that capitalizes on the Swiger Fellow's academic talent.
