Adopt-A-Street Guidelines

    1. Select a street or alley (or section) you would like to adopt. In selecting the area, take into consideration the size of your organization and the area you can adequately maintain.
    2. Volunteer’s safety should be considered:

      Is it heavily traveled?

Is the traffic traveling at high speeds?

      Is the berm too narrow?

If the answer is yes to these questions, we suggest you carefully review your selection and possibly choose another.

    3. There is no minimum size set for the section or street, but the area must be continuous.
    4. After you have tentatively selected an area, you need to contact the City Manager’s Office at 284-7405 to determine if the section is available. Your official request must be in writing.
    5. After the request is approved, a sign indicating the group’s adoption of the street will be erected by the city.
    6. Preferably, the area would require the group’s attention once per month or at least four times a year.
    7. The sponsoring group will provide the trash bags and the personnel to collect the litter.
    8. The bagged trash should be placed at the curbs on regular pick- up days. If the accumulation is large, or there are any questions, call BFI at 296-3696.
    9. For arrangements to use the orange vests contact the City Manager’s Office or the Department of Public Works at 284-7412.
    10. The streets will be checked periodically, and any organization that does not fulfill their pledge may be asked to forfeit the area to another group.
    11. The City should be notified immediately if you wish to discontinue this volunteer service.
    12. Each fall, the organization should renew/update their street and contact information using this form or by e-mail to Donna Ford-Werntz: diford@mail.wvu.edu.
