Disegno Italia Semester Program, Tuscany
Course Information

CORE COURSES:

Experiencing the Tuscan Cultural Landscape, 3 credits
Humanities based cultural immersion course integrating field trips and academic study introducing students to the unique culture of Tuscany.

Disegno Italia, 3 credits
Examines the history and concept of disegno (design), considered as an animating principle of creative processes in Italian visual, decorative, and industrial arts. Includes presentations on art restoration and demonstrations of traditional artistic processes.

Italian Language and Conversation, 3-6 credits
Syllabus
Instruction of Italian language at the elementary or intermediate level, focused on grammar and communication skills.

ELECTIVES:

Italian Art in Context, 3 credits
Syllabus
This course examines the history of Italian Art and Architecture within its cultural and societal context. Guided by primary sources, students will view and study many monumental works of Italian art on location and learn traditional fresco, tempera and oil painting techniques.

Sketching and Painting in Tuscany, 3 credits
Integrates outdoor painting and sketching of significant Tuscan sites with the study of the art and writings of Italian and foreign artists to examine their responses to the Tuscan landscape.

Independent Study, variable credits
Independent research on a topic relevant to a semester’s study in Tuscany guided by a contractual arrangement with il Sillabo faculty and faculty at the student’s home institution.
