Interested in learning how to create effective
presentations and handouts? This session will begin with the basics and progress
to adding animation, graphics, and web pages.
1. Create a new presentation using: Blank
presentation
A. Choose an AutoLayout:
- Single click on the thumbnail

- Begin by choosing a Title
Slide
- Click to add a title and subtitle
B. Create a new slide
- Click on the New Slide icon OR
- From the Insert menu, select
New Slide
C. Select the Bulleted List layout
- Click to add title and bulleted
items
D. Continue exploring the AutoLayout slides and
create five or more slides
2. Change the font and add color
A. From the Format menu, select Font
or Replace Fonts
- Change the color of text
- Choose More Colors... for more
choices
B. Add Color
- From the Format menu, select
Slide Color Scheme
- From the Format menu, select
Background...
- From the Format menu, select
Apply Design
3. Incorporate Animation
A. From the Slide Show menu, select Custom
Animation
- From the Slide Show menu,
select Animation Preview
B. Or, select Preset
Animation
4. Add Graphics
A. Identify the graphics you wish to use
- Find images that DO NOT contain a
copyright notice from the Internet (recommended search engines for
finding graphics: AltaVista, HotBot and Lycos)
- Use ClipArt from PowerPoint or
other software sources
B. From the Insert menu, select Picture
- Select ClipArt
- Choose an image and click on OK
to insert
- Resize the image by clicking and
dragging one of the corners in to reduce or out to expand
5. Add Web Page Images
A. Copy the WVU College of Law home page screen
(note: the WVU logo is protected by copyright)
- Open your browser (Explorer or
Netscape)
- Press the Print Screen button
to capture the entire screen image
- In PowerPoint, select a new slide
and choose the blank layout
- Paste the image into a Blank
slide (edit, paste)
B. Eliminate the task bar
- Move your mouse to the top of the
task bar until you see a double vertical arrow
- Click and drag the top of the task
bar down until it is out of sight
- Use the Tab key to toggle
between applications
6. Preview your slides
A. From the View menu
- Select Slide Sorter to
rearrange slides
- Select Outline to add or
delete text
7. Watch your slide show
A. From the View menu, select Slide
Show
B. Other options under Slide Show:
- Rehearse timing
- Set up show
- Slide transition
8. Other nifty things
A. From the View menu
- Select Header and Footer to:
- Add the Date and Time of
your presentation
- Add Slide
Numbers
- Add a Comment
- Speaker Notes
