Subject Searching on the Internet

Unlike commercial online sources that group statutes, regulations, cases, etc. together in one neat place, searching the Internet for information on one subject can be time consuming and frustrating if you don’t know where to begin. This guide will help identify the types of information most readily available on the Internet and illuminate starting points for subject searching.

  • Links to other administrative actions which are outside the scope of the CFR or the FR. What is available via the Internet varies from agency to agency. Maintained by UVA School of Law.

Cornell's Legal Information Institute - Law About... 

  • LII provides an alphabetical listing of legal topics.  Within each topic is an overview of the subject, a hypertext listing of U.S. Code titles and chapters, hypertext links to the CFR, and other references, such as links to relevant case law or agency web sites.

Law Scout - Internet Hotlist of Law Guides

  • This list is designed to link to legal research guides and pathfinders from various American law libraries. Maintained by the University of Akron Law Library.

Internet Legal Resource Guide

  • Topical index of legal resources with the source in parenthesis. 

LawRunner: A Legal Research Tool 

  • Use LawRunner to limit searches to a particular jurisdiction, or to web sites with a particular domain suffix (.gov, .edu, etc.). Search results can be prioritized to display matches with "LAW" or "LEGAL" in the URL Title or Keyword Index.
