What is the difference between a statute and a code?

According to Black's Law Dictionary, 8th edition a statute is defined as:

"A law passed by a legislative body."
Black's defines a code as:
"...a systematic collection or revision of laws, rules, or regulations." (e.g., Michie's West Virginia Code Annotated or West's Annotated Code of West Virgina)

Michie's West Virginia Code Annotated and West's Annotated Code of West Virginia contain the laws of West Virginia passed by the West Virginia Legislature. The Code is organized by Chapter, Article, and Section.

For both Michie's West Virginia Code Annotated and West's Annotated Code of West Virginia, the volume number and the chapters contained within each volume are located on the spine of each volume. The spine of each volume of Michie's West Virginia Code Annotated also contain the date of the replacement volume. Both publications have an outline of the Chapters contained within the West Virginia Code printed in the front of each volume.

Michie's West Virginia Code Annotated is updated with pocket parts and soft bound supplements as laws are amended. The Advanced Code Service pamphlets are published three times a year in between Code supplements to keep the Code up-to-date. The Advanced Code Service may also include legislation from extraordinary sessions.

West's Annotated Code of West Viriginia is updated annually with pocket parts. West's West Virginia Legislative Service Pamphlets are issued during and immediately after each session of the Legislature to keep the Code up-to-date.
