
Lauren Dembeck is a junior from Wallace, WV. She is double majoring in Biology and Spanish. Lauren is a student of the Honors College at WVU and is a coordinator of the Honors freshmen orientation. She is also active as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and the Betty Puskar Breast Cancer Center. Lauren enjoys reading, drawing, riding ATVs and camping, fishing, and playing sports, particularly volley ball and ice hockey. She would like to travel as much as possible, starting by studying abroad in Santander, Spain in July 2006. In addition to being a McNair Scholar, she is also an Eberly Scholar. For her McNair research, she will be working with Dr. David Ray of the Biology department on crocodilian DNA in an attempt to identify repetitive genomic elements, which could later be used to investigate the crocodilian phylogeny. Lauren plans to obtain a Ph.D. in conservation genetics.
Heather Gomez is a senior from
Ridgeley, WV. She is majoring in the Industrial Math and
Statistics program at WVU and is also a member of the national
college honor society; Alpha Chi. Heather expects to receive her
B.S. from WVU in May 2008, and then plans to pursue research at
the Ph.D. level. Her interests include tropical fish, small
animals, and food.
Kelly Hale is a senior in the College of Business and Economics majoring in Accounting with a minor in Spanish. She was born and raised in Charleston, WV. Kelly is currently a member of the honorary organization Beta Alpha Psi where she holds the position of Vice President of Operations. After completing her Bachelor degree studies, Kelly plans to continue on in pursuit of her M.S. in Accounting. Some of her interests include bowling, crocheting, and hanging out with her friends and loved ones.
Lenin Leon is a rising senior majoring in electrical and computer engineering. He was born in Valencia, Venezuela and he now lives in Barrackville, WV. His research interests are in nanotechnology and bioengineering. He is looking forward to learning more about nanotechnology when he begins working on his McNair research project in Dr. Parviz Famouri’s lab. Outside of school he enjoys spending time with his wife and two dogs. He also enjoys playing and watching baseball and soccer.
Alee Robins is a senior from Morgantown, WV. She is currently pursuing dual degrees in psychology and religious studies. She is a member of the psychology honorary Psi Chi and West Virginia University’s Honors College. Her research project for the McNair program focuses on religious commitment and attitudes about suicide. She hopes to contribute to the prevention of suicide through research and working with individuals at risk. After graduating from WVU in the spring of 2007, she intends to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
Nnenna Minimah is currently a senior at WVU pursuing a B.S. degree in Psychology. She is from Charleston, WV. She is a member of Psi Chi National Psychology Honorary, Phi Sigma Pi National Coed Honorary Fraternity, IHD (Institute for Human Dignity), Alchemy Dance Project, and WVU Dance Marathon Executive Committee. Nnenna plans to attend graduate school to attain a Ph.D. in Health Psychology. Her McNair research focuses on hypertension and anxiety in college students. After completing her graduate education, Nnenna plans to do research in the areas of cardiovascular health and young adults’ risky health behaviors.
Ian Lutz hails from Lewisburg in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He is currently a junior in the Landscape Architecture department at WVU and is planning to graduate with his B.S. degree in May of 2008. His McNair research will involve human preferences of vegetation in urban spaces. He also plans to achieve a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture or Horticulture, and then travel extensively to work and teach around the world. You can catch Ian performing all over West Virginia with his reggae band, "Vern's Pot o' Chili".
Tembele Tara Yangandawele is a rising junior in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Biochemistry. Originally from The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, he currently heads social affairs activities of the African Student Association (ASA) at WVU. Currently, Tembele is conducting his McNair research under the direction of Dr. Jorge Flores of the Biology department. Tembele’s graduate school research interests include the study of virology or microbiology.
