Christopher Wilkinson
Professor - Music History
Christopher Wilkinson specializes in the history of African-American music with particular attention to jazz as well as to the history of art music from a multicultural perspective. He teaches courses on the history of western music, jazz history, also research methods and bibliography, as well as graduate seminars on various topics of European and American music. Currently, his research focuses upon the reception of jazz in the African-American communities of West Virginia during the Swing Era. Dr. Wilkinson received his B.A. in Music from Hamilton College, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University. In 2001, the University of California Press published his biographical study Jazz on the Road: Don Albert's Musical Life. He has also published articles in American Music, Black Music Research Journal, College Music Symposium, Contributions to Music Education, Music and Letters, and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2d ed. Additional publications have appeared in George Crumb: Profile of a Composer; and Oratorios of the Italian Baroque. His research has been supported by a Summer Stipend and a Travel-to-Collections Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fellowships and Media Grants from the West Virginia Humanities Council, as well as Development and Research Grants from West Virginia University.
