Graduate Awards
Graduate Awards in the Division of Music are highly competitive, and are based on artistic merit, academic merit, professional experience, and the applicant’s strengths and interests, in conjunction with the ever-evolving needs of the division. Priority consideration is given to students who have completed admissions files by March 1 . Almost half of the graduate students in the Division of Music receive financial support from the division. This support comes in many forms such as 1) Graduate Assistantships (typically 28 are available), 2) doctoral fellowships (see page 48 and 49 of the WVU Graduate Catalog), 3) Graduate Student employment, and 4) partial tuition waivers. All graduate students who complete the Graduate Assistantship Application are considered for any type of financial support available.
Graduate Assistantships
The Division of Music has Graduate Assistantships with a variety of responsibilities available for qualified applicants. Students currently receive a minimum stipend of $9464 (paid in eighteen installments over a nine-month appointment) in addition to a full tuition waiver for the two semesters of the academic year. The total value of a Division of Music Graduate Assistantship for a non-resident student is $23,048; for a resident student it is $13,696. The term of service is normally from August 15 to May 15 with an obligation of up to twenty clock hours of work per week. Graduate Assistants must carry a minimum of nine credit hours. Assistantships are renewable upon request with Master's degree students limited to two nine-month appointments, and doctoral students limited to three nine-month appointments.
Supplemental Graduate Teaching Assistantships
A limited number of Graduate Assistants receive an additional award beyond the usual stipend, with no additional obligations. These awards are made only to Graduate Assistants who have not previously been enrolled in a WVU graduate degree program, and are usually limited to students with degrees from other institutions. Doctoral students are given preference.
Partial Tuition Waivers
Graduate students without assistantships are automatically considered for a limited number of partial tuition waivers, which usually range in value from three to five credit hours. Doctoral students are given preference.
