Director of Orchestral Activities

DATE OF APPOINTMENT:  August 16, 2008

(Classes begin August 18, 2008)

QUALIFICATIONS:  Established reputation with distinguished conducting experience in recognized venues.  Experience must be commensurate for appointment at the associate professor level.  The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to building and promoting a university symphony orchestra.  Master of Music degree required. Doctorate (or equivalent) and University teaching experience preferred.        

SALARY AND RANK:  Associate Professor. Competitive salary commensurate with background and experience. Pending available funding.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Full-time, nine month, tenure track appointment.  Primary assignment is conducting and managing the WVU Symphony Orchestra (an ensemble of approximately 70 performers), and developing a comprehensive orchestra curriculum.  Opportunities to conduct other ensembles may be available.  Teaching assignments includes the instruction of courses in undergraduate and graduate conducting and orchestra literature.  Participation in recruitment activities, annual honors orchestra weekend, and faculty governance is expected.  Additional responsibilities will be assigned according to the needs of the Division and abilities of the candidate.

COLLEGE OF CREATIVE ARTS, DIVISION OF MUSIC:  The College of Creative Arts (http://www.ccarts.wvu.edu/):  The College of Creative Arts is one of 13 colleges within the University and includes the Divisions of Music, Theatre and Dance, and Art and offers the state’s premiere training in the visual and performing arts.  Each division is nationally accredited (NAST, NASM, NASAD).

The College is housed in WVU’s recently renovated Creative Arts Center.  There are approximately 700 majors in the college, 71 full-time faculty and 21 professional staff.  The mission of the faculty and staff of the College of Creative Arts is to advance the visual and performing arts and advocate life-long appreciation, understanding, and involvement in the arts as a medium in which the diversity of human experience is expressed, examined, and valued.  The College accomplishes this mission by being student-centered, and by educating succeeding generations of artists, teachers, and scholars through excellence and innovation in performance, exhibition, scholarship, and the dissemination of creative research.

Of the almost 700 majors in the College of Creative Arts, roughly 240 are in the Division of Music.  The Division of Music comprises 35 full-time and 8 part-time faculty, and is the only fully accredited music unit in the state of West Virginia that offers B.A., B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and Ph.D. programs in music. In addition, the College’s Community Arts program provides private and group music instruction to students of all ages and levels of experience.
