Undergraduate Academic Progress Policy
The WVU Division of Music faculty has adopted this statement on academic progress in music courses to encourage students to complete their degree programs in a reasonable period of time.
A full-time undergraduate music student is expected to complete the "core" music classes in a timely fashion as follows:
Year 1 - Music 189 (Music Convocation) - 2 semesters
- Music 161 (Aural Theory I)
- Music 162 (Written Theory I)
- Music 163 (Aural Theory II)
- Music 164 (Written Theory II)
- Music 177 (Introduction to Music Listening)
Year 2 - Music 189 (Music Convocation) - 2 semesters
- Music 261 (Aural Theory III)
- Music 262 (Written Theory III)
- Music 263 (Aural Theory IV)
- Music 270 (History of Western Musical Traditions I)
- Level 2 in piano (as a secondary instrument)
- and
- Music 264 (Written Theory IV), OR
- Music 271 (History of Western Music Traditions II) -
Note: English 102 must precede enrollment in Music 271
If a student does not meet these expectations, he/she will receive a letter of warning at the end of the relevant semester. If the student fails any one of these courses, he/she must pass it the next time it is offered. If a student does not complete these courses with passing grades within one year of schedule, he/she will be dismissed (suspended) from the music program, unless there are compelling extenuating circumstances.
