Summer 2007 Courses
Three Exciting New NAS Offerings
Contemporary Issues in Native American Communities; Amizade Global Service Learning With the Navajo Nation -- NAS 493 (6 credits)
This course will be taught on location in New Mexico and is supervised by Dr. Monica Frolander. Strudents must log on and apply for admission at: www.globalservicelearning.org for this extended learning course. It will be held in New Mexico June 10-30, 2007.
Native American Materials & Practices-- NAS 493H (3 credits)
Taught by Joe Candillo Monday-Friday from 1:30-3:50 p.m. during summer '07: May 21st-June 9th. This course is designed to introduce the student to another component of the vast complexities of Native American studies by examining the specific role material culture & art plays in defining and expressing American Indian culture. In this course, students will further explore American Indian tradition and history by way of hands-on learning processes involved in making material culture. As time permits, students will be instructed on the manufacturing technique, function, and use of many prehistoric tools such as pottery, cordage, the atl atl, netting & basketry, animal decoy calls, American Indian games, musical instruments, and an assortment of other interesting technologies.
Cherokee History and Culture -- NAS 493J (3 credits)
Taught by Travis Henline. This course, which includes an intensive week-long experience in Cherokee for three upper-division NAS credits. This experience will combine traditional academic learning with cultural experiences in the Cherokee community on the Cherokee Indian Reservation (Qualla Boundary) in Cherokee, North Carolina. The course will follow an interdisciplinary approach, and will touch upon archaeology, history, culture, linguistics, folklore, storytelling, medicine, hands-on arts and crafts, and present day Cherokee life. Fee: $500 (covers transportation, lodging, workshops, etc., fee does not include tuition, textbooks, or meals)
Fee may be covered by student enrichment funds. Students must sign up for this course through the Native American Studies Program office.

Introduction to Native American Studies -- NAS 200 (3 credits)
Taught by Bonnie M. Brown on Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. -12:50 p.m. The course surveys the major Native cultural groups, their historical and contemporary contributions to American society, and honoring Native peoples’ culture, language, spirituality, and identity.
Literature of Native America -- English 156 (3 credits)
This course will not be offered during the Summer '07 sessions.
American Indian History -- History 264 (3 credits)
This course will not be offered during the Summer '07 sessions.
