ONAI (Organization for Native American Interests)
ONAI (pronounced “OWN-eye”) is the Organization for Native American Interests, a WVU student group that provides student enrichment opportunities outside the classroom.
ONAI is one of many student organizations devoted to cultural exploration. Often community members take part in the organization’s events along with student members. Students need not be Native American or NAS minors to take part in regular group activities, but should have both a strong desire to learn more about Native America and a commitment to social justice. ONAI students often volunteer their time providing educational and cultural programming aimed at school children and community organizations.
When the group was founded, four areas of dedication were outlined…
Education: ONAI stresses education on Native American subjects for its members as well as through educational outreach to the university and local community.
Preservation: This pertains to preservation of cultural traditions as well as the group’s traditions.
Service: ONAI strives to provide students with service opportunities in connection with Native American activities, both on campus and elsewhere.
Spirituality: The group promotes the process of pursuing a more intimate, personal relationship with the Creator.
