Charlene Vivian Stringer was born in Pennsylvania in the late 1940's (Hine, 1997). In Stringer's early life, she had two driving forces, they were to participate in a variety of sports, and to be educated. Stringer not only excelled in Field Hockey, but also in softball and basketball as well.
Stringer attended Slippery Rock State College
in Pennsylvania, where she attained her masters in Physical Education.
While in college, Stringer still let into her desire to play sports and
competed in both basketball and field hockey. While playing these two sports
she received most valuable player in basketball, and she made the Mid-East
field hockey team. (Hine, 1997) Today Stringer holds the women's head basketball
coach position at Rutgers University. Her winning percentage is ranked
as the fourth best in the Nation. This along with a great attitude has
earned Stringer a salary higher than both Rutgers men's basketball and
football coaches.
