Course Objectives:

The goals of this class are to introduce the student to basic marketing principles and concepts. Students will be taken beneath the glitter and spectacle into the broader world of sport. The purpose is to provide a practical application of marketing science to all realms of the sport industry.

Students will be active participants in the learning process. Students will learn through a variety of methods including onsite visits to Corporate Sport Venues such as Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates. Students will have the opportunity to meet professional Sport Marketerss to learn what they do and how they do it in the real world. Students will participate in an overnight trip to an area Ski Resort, again to see first hand how seasonal Sport and Tourism industries market to specific segments of society.

Students will work individually on class projects as well as work with groups of their peers on out of class assignments. A portion of the course will include research and presentation of case studies.

We will address the following segments of the sport industry:

*Professional
Interscholastic
Intramural
*Intercollegiate
Amateur
Resort & Tourism
Recreation Management
All elements of commercial and public sport and recreational facilities, clubs, resorts, camps and service organizations.

This class will further investigate the numerous commonalities in marketing sport which warrant a common management science and marketing science approach. After taking this class the students will have some knowledge of how to fill stadium, fill court time in a racquet sport club, sell athletic socks, and attract people to participate in sport activities in a resort.

This class will attempt to be as relevant for students in sports management/administration programs as it is for sport marketing practioners.

C Attendance is required.

C Individual Projects will be given to you during the second week of classes. They are to be completed individually and are due on April 17-27.

C Sales Presentations will take place March 13, 15, 20, 22. You will be required to make a sales presentation to the class. The class will have the opportunity to ask you questions regarding your sales proposal. Topics for the Sales Presentations will stem from your Individual Projects.

C Students can earn class participation points by being involved in class discussions.

C Students are expected to follow the registration/withdrawal procedures that are outlined in the catalog and handbooks.
