West Virginia University
West Virginia University is the flagship institution of higher education in West Virginia. The University has an enrollment of more than 22,000 students, one-fourth of whom are at the graduate and professional level. Nearly 40% of the undergraduate students are from out of state. Graduate degrees are offered in 75 fields, as well as professional degrees in law, medicine, and related disciplines. West Virginia University encompasses three campuses in the Morgantown area: the Downtown campus (includes the Physics Department), the Health Science Center campus (Medical school and hospital), and the Evansdale Campus (Engineering). The Personal Rapid Transit system provides quick transportation between campuses.
The Local Community
Greater Morgantown has a population of approximately 65,000 and is located near the northern border of West Virginia, 70 miles south of Pittsburgh and 190 miles west of Washington, D.C. The local economy has been shifting from manufacturing towards high-tech industries. Recently, a new NASA software verification center and the FBI fingerprinting center have moved to the Morgantown area. Medical and hospital facilities are excellent and local schools are very good. Cultural events ranging from opera to rock concerts are sponsored by the University. The region is also known for its outdoor recreational facilities with skiing, hiking, and whitewater sports all within easy access of Morgantown.
