More About WVU
West Virginia University offers the advantages of a large, comprehensive, land-grant institution offering 176 degree programs in a medium-sized town environment. The size of WVU allows a broader, more flexible education than that available in smaller colleges. On the other hand, a number of features of WVU and the Physics Department (e.g., the size of our department, the departmental advising, and the WVU honors program) offer a level of personal attention more characteristic of smaller colleges. The quality of education available at WVU is recognized by the college and university guides which rank us with many of the other fine public universities in the Middle Atlantic region.
The Department of Physics is part of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at WVU. This College is the heart of the University and it takes great pride in providing the liberal education that allows students to become citizens of the world. Students of this College can develop a taste for French literature, investigate the history of man, explore the cultures of China, and study the classics of philosophy. The departments in the College cover the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. The College awards degrees to over 1100 students per year. Our College is by far the largest on campus with its 300 faculty and 48 degree programs.
The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences is a community of scholars. Twenty of the 23 Rhodes Scholars chosen at WVU came from Arts and Sciences. In addition, 9 of the 12 Truman Scholars chosen at WVU were students in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences (ranking WVU among the top 10 public universities). The libraries contain over 1.5 million books, and over 9000 periodicals. These holdings support the diverse academic and research programs of the university and provide students with ready access to needed resources.
The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences is housed on the downtown campus near the center of Morgantown. Located just 75 miles south of Pittsburgh and 200 miles west of Washington, D.C., WVU provides students with the opportunity to participate in the cultural and social events in these major metropolitan areas. Usually, the Society of Physics Students (SPS) organizes a yearly trip to the Washington area to visit research laboratories. Morgantown combines the convenience of a small metropolitan area (population of 75,000) with the outdoor activities available in its scenic recreational setting (skiing, boating, mountain climbing, etc.) and also with the cultural events provided by a large university and the proximity to major metropolitan areas.
