I. Introduction and Overview
Welcome to the Department of Psychology at West Virginia University. This handbook has been prepared by the Graduate Training Committee (GTC) to help students succeed in our graduate programs. Much of the graduate experience takes place outside the traditional classroom setting, and much of its quality depends upon students’ own initiative and judgment. To help students make good decisions, this handbook describes many of the rules, regulations, requirements, and policies of the Department and the University.
This first section of the handbook includes information that will be especially useful for entering students, but that continuing students also may refer to from time to time. The section begins with an overview of the graduate programs and information about the Department of Psychology. Then, procedures and policies concerning advising, registration and fees, and payroll are described. A list of University service relevant to graduate students is provided, followed by some information concerning living in Morgantown. Finally, the Department’s junior colleague model of training is described in detail. Further information on some of these topics is provided in the remainder of the handbook.
