Accessible Housing

How to apply?

Requirements for Housing Accomodations

Housing and University Apartments

The following information is provided to assist WVU students who wish to obtain disability-based accommodations to their housing assignment. If you are an incoming freshman, a housing application is contained along with the orientation package that must be completed and submitted to the housing office. Please read and follow all of the guidelines for housing contained in materials received from the University and the University Housing Office.

If you are a person with a disability that requires housing accommodations, you must contact the Office of Disability Services in addition to the WVU Housing Office. The Office of Disability Services requires that you submit appropriate documentation that substantiates your need for accessible housing. Although application for accessible housing is made through the Office of Disability Services, all other policies and procedures by the Housing and University Apartments Office apply.

Documentation Requirements

It is important to remember that in all housing requests WVU Housing deadlines must be maintained. It is important that housing needs are anticipated early in the application process. Requests for accessible housing need to be communicated prior to housing request deadlines and in time for the review of documentation process to be completed. A more complete description of the guidelines for requesting accessible housing can be obtained from WVU Housing at:

    2. A clear statement of diagnosis,
    3. An explanation of the diagnostic criteria and tests used to make the
      diagnosis,
    4. A statement of the current limitations based upon specified test results specified in the evaluation report,
    5. Treatments, medications, devices, or services prescribed or used to
minimize the impact of the condition,
    6. The duration, stability, or progression of the condition.

Guidelines for Accessible Housing

The following guidelines apply to any request to obtain housing accommodations at WVU:

  1. Housing accommodations are provided only on the basis of appropriate documentation of a disability that meets all of the criteria.
  2. The student will be notified by the Office of Disability Services as to the appropriateness of the documentation.
  3. The student must apply for university housing in the manner used by all other students.
  4. The student must meet all of the deadlines and timelines of the application for housing as all other students.
  5. A diagnosis of a disorder, condition or syndrome in and of itself does not automatically qualify an individual for disability based accommodations.
  6. Given that all Housing Guidelines and Timelines apply for all students, time should be allowed for the documentation process.
  7. Once documentation of the need for housing accommodations based upon disability is approved by the Office of Disability Services, the University Housing Office will be contacted informing them of the student's need for housing accommodations and that appropriate documentation has been received.
  8. The University Housing Office will contact the student to inform them of the housing arrangements.
