Excel.

WVU Law excels in teaching and training future lawyers in a rigorous and supportive academic setting. Our students build an essential foundation of core legal knowledge their first year, then focus on their expertise in their second and third year. As the only law school in the state, we are able to prepare lawyers by providing exceptional practice-ready learning opportunities and unparalleled access to the professional legal community.

Lead.

We believe lawyers are leaders — in their field, in their place of employment, and in their community. Honing those skills is a key component of a WVU Law education, from taking a specialized class or being involved with a student organization. WVU Law also leads by example, addressing vital issues such as energy and sustainability, consumer matters, and diversity in the law.

Serve.

Providing a service for others is the essence of the legal profession. At WVU Law, our award-winning law clinics help those in need while giving students practical experience working with clients. Other opportunities to serve include joining the Public Interest Advocates’ fellowship program or volunteering for a local organization. WVU Law also serves the ongoing educational needs of the legal community. Service is an integral part of our mission as a land-grant institution.

Who We Are

WVU Law's mission is to prepare 21st century lawyers and leaders to serve the public, government, and business—both locally and globally—while focusing on justice, ethics, professionalism, and service in a diverse, vibrant, and respectful community. As the only law school in the state, we provide students with unparalleled networking opportunities and exclusive access to the legal community.

Client-Ready Focus

We teach the law in ways that prepare students to be client-ready the day they graduate. Our classroom experiences are enhanced by widely available experiential learning opportunities through law clinics serving those in need; externships in nonprofit, government, and judicial settings; and legal work during the summer or academic year that prepares our students for a fulfilling career in the law.

Leading Edge Law

Since 1878, WVU Law has provided law students with the professional education and experiences they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. Well into our second century, this includes focusing on law in public service; preparing lawyers to help shape the global energy discussion; and helping communities better manage their land use and sustainable development initiatives.
