Computer Engineering, BSCPE

Computer Engineering teaches you how information systems are put together from components, and provides you with an understanding of both hardware and software systems. This major provides the training necessary for some of the fastest growing fields, including big data analytics, cybersecurity, robotics and networking.

Our program provides a particularly strong emphasis on real-time and embedded systems. We also provide you with a unique set of opportunities to participate in national level student competitions against other universities.

Computer engineers are in high demand and some surveys rank computer engineering as the top paid engineering profession for new graduates.

Computer Engineering students can take part in the Department of Energy-sponsored EcoCAR Mobility Challenge, which is led by the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering.

Before graduating, all undergraduates in this major complete an academic project (or "capstone") to demonstrate their research, communication and critical thinking skills. Projects in WVU's Computer Engineering major have included:

  • Automated greenhouse.
  • Automated sensor system for monitoring water.
  • Development of a self-guided wheelchair.
  • Robotic ball retriever for tennis court.

Network and Computer Systems Administrators

Install, configure, and maintain an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), data communications network, operating systems, and physical and virtual servers. Perform system monitoring and verify the integrity and availability of hardware, network, and server resources and systems. Review system and application logs and verify completion of scheduled jobs, including system backups. Analyze network and server resource consumption and control user access. Install and upgrade software and maintain software licenses. May assist in network modeling, analysis, planning, and coordination between network and data communications hardware and software.

Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers

Develop and execute software tests to identify software problems and their causes. Test system modifications to prepare for implementation. Document software and application defects using a bug tracking system and report defects to software or web developers. Create and maintain databases of known defects. May participate in software design reviews to provide input on functional requirements, operational characteristics, product designs, and schedules.
