AP, CLEP, IB, Cambridge International, and Military Service Credit

Advanced Placement Program (AP)

Administered by the College Board, AP examinations verify if you have earned competency equal to that of a college course.

AP credit for first-time freshmen will be reviewed by an academic adviser during New Student Orientation. The AP chart below serves as a guide and includes the subject area, minimum AP score, and equivalent WVU course.

First-time transfer students are required to submit the advanced credit articulation request ticket for AP credit to be applied.

How to Submit Scores

AP scores may be submitted to the Office of Admissions as follows:

  • An electronic score report ordered via College Board. Use code 5904. Electronic score delivery takes 5-7 business days to process from the date sent.
  • Currently enrolled WVU students seeking transfer credit for AP courses must submit the official AP score report and file the AP articulation request ticket.

AP Credit Chart

1AP, 1CL, and 1IB indicate that exam scores do not have an approved equivalency. Credit may be awarded after review by the Transfer Credit Unit and/or your academic adviser.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

If an incoming student has gained a significant level of maturity through life experiences, they may receive college credit for those educationally-related experiences through CLEP, which is administered by the College Board.

With the exception of English composition, up to 35 hours of general education or elective credit may be earned for successful performance on the CLEP general examinations.

Although this program was designed primarily for adults, exceptionally well-qualified high school seniors may use the CLEP program.

Students who have taken CLEP examinations prior to enrollment must submit an official CLEP transcript. Current students may not earn college credit via CLEP, unless a department does not offer credit-by-examination and the student has secured prior approval. Veterans may receive advanced placement for specific military experience and should contact the Office of Admissions for specific information.

The following CLEP charts indicate the areas in which WVU grants credit based on the minimum score required.

A and AS Levels from Cambridge International

WVU welcomes applications from students with Cambridge International A and AS Level Certificates for advanced placement credit.

A maximum of 6 to 8 credits per subject can be awarded for Cambridge International A Level grades ranging from E or above, with the submission of an official Cambridge Examination Certificate. Cambridge International AS Levels with grades of E or above will receive a maximum of 3 to 4 credits, with the submission of an official Cambridge Examination Certificate.

For more information, please contact internationaladmissions@mail.wvu.edu.

Military Credit

WVU seeks to award college level credit for transcribed occupations held by servicemen and servicewomen of the Armed Forces. Under the umbrella of credit for prior learning, students are given the option of articulating credit from military experience if academically advantageous for them. Students are encouraged to consult with their academic adviser to determine if adding such credit is beneficial.

Required Documentation

Students must have an official copy of their Joint Service Transcript on file with the Office of Admissions.

Students who have a Community College of the Air Force transcript must send a copy to the Office of Admissions.
