Transferring Course Credit to WVU

We welcome students who’ve completed college-level (non-remedial) courses at other institutions. This page gives an overview of how your credit may transfer to WVU as a:

Will my course transfer?

WVU accepts grades and credits for college-level courses from institutions accredited by the Higher Learning Commission or other regional accrediting associations accepted by WVU.

To see how your course may transfer, use the Transfer Equivalency Self Service system [LINK TO PAGE]. All transfer students, both prospective and admitted, can use TESS.

Key points to keep in mind:

  • Credits from 2-year community colleges and junior colleges are limited to a maximum of 72 hours of lower-division credit.
  • Credit hours don’t change when transferred to WVU. Example: If you earned 3 credit hours in a course at your institution and the WVU equivalent course is 4 credit hours, you will only receive 3 transfer credit hours.
  • If you have coursework from an institution without HLC or regional accreditation, you must request approval to have that coursework articulated as Credit for Prior Learning.

After you’re admitted to WVU

Your college-level coursework will be evaluated by the Office of Admissions after you’ve been accepted for admission to WVU. This happens automatically after you’re admitted. You don’t need to request evaluation.

We translate your previous credit into WVU courses based on the information in our transfer credit database. The results will be available in DegreeWorks [WHEN? Can we add timeframe?]. DegreeWorks is a tool for tracking your progress toward graduation.

How Courses Transfer

Your course …Result in DegreeWorks
Exactly matches a WVU courseGets the WVU subject and course number (e.g., SOCA 101).
Is accepted but has no direct match.Gets a “TC” code (e.g., HIST 1TC)
Isn’t in the WVU transfer database.Appears as NOEQ 100. Use the Transfer Equivalency Review Request to request evaluation.

In some cases, transfer courses will count as general WVU credit rather than toward specific degree requirements. Your WVU adviser and academic college or school will determine how and/or whether courses are applied toward completing your degree.

Note: Your course’s subject may change to better align with WVU courses. Example: A course on plant structures and anatomy that was a biology course at your previous institution may be translated to PLSC (Plant Science) on your WVU transcript.

Appeals

You may appeal the evaluation of your transfer credit within 1 semester of transferring. Email your request to transfercredit@mail.wvu.edu with specific information about the course in question.

More About Transfer Credit

WVU students taking courses elsewhere (transient credit)

Current WVU students intending to earn credits at another regionally accredited school should first consult with their academic adviser for authorization.

After identifying your target coursework, you and your adviser can use the transfer credit database to check for equivalent transient courses. If a specific course is missing from our records, you may submit a Transfer Equivalency Review Request.

An approved transient credit form is required for any coursework to be accepted. Credit completed at other institutions without this official prior approval may not be eligible for transfer or count toward your degree requirements.

See Transient Credit Approval Process for detailed instructions.

Transient Form Required

An approved transient credit form is required for any coursework to be accepted. Credit completed at other institutions without this official prior approval may not be eligible for transfer or count toward your degree requirements.
