How to Use TESS

The WVU Transfer Equivalency Self-Service system helps you identify course equivalency information for courses from other institutions. Any student (prospective, admitted, or current) can use TESS to explore equivalencies and see how courses might apply to a WVU degree program.

Do I need to create an account?

Using TESS without an account is fine for a one-time use. Create an account if you want to save your work.

Enter Course Information

  1. Go to TESS.
  2. Select “Continue without signing in,” “Have an account? Log in,” or “Create an account.”
  3. Answer several questions about your academic goals. Your responses are used to prepare the system to sort your courses and determine your progress toward degree completion.
    1. After each question, click the “Complete Step” button (or “Skip” or “Finish,” when applicable).
    2. After entering your intended program, answers for subsequent questions will automatically populate based on your chosen program.
    3. Consult the WVU Catalog or contact your admissions counselor if you have questions about your intended program.
    4. Click “Finish” when you’re done entering your academic goals.
  4. Enter details of the class you’ll be transferring to WVU. Use the search tool or alphabetical lists to find your institution and course.
    1. If you’re transferring multiple courses, check the appropriate option in Next Steps and click “Next.” You will see the course you entered appear under My Transfer Work.
  5. When all courses have been entered, select “I’m all done and would like to run a transfer audit” and click “Next” to view your transfer audit.

Understanding Your Audit

You will receive a translation of your course credit in the “Course equivalencies” section. If any of your courses are translated to NOEQ 100, it may be due to one of these reasons:

  • There may be a discrepancy between the number of credit hours you entered for the course and the number of credit hours listed in the WVU database. Return to the info page for the particular class and confirm that the correct number of credit hours was entered.
  • The year you took the course may be before equivalency begins within the WVU database. Depending on the type of institution, WVU retains an equivalency for only a set amount of time in order to guarantee that equivalencies are up to date. If this is the case, use the Transfer Equivalency Review Request system to request the course be re-evaluated.
  • Your institution or course isn’t in our database yet. You can use the TERR system to request evaluation of your course or institution. If you have more than 5 courses that require evaluation, submit an unofficial transcript to transfercredit@mail.wvu.edu. An initial review will be made, and you will be notified of the results.

If you believe you received NOEQ 100 for another reason, or in error, email transfercredit@mail.wvu.edu.

After reviewing your results, return to the Transferring Course Credit page for next steps.
