Meet Your Orientation Leaders

They'll be with you every step of the way.

Portrait of Matthew Casey

Matthew Casey

Major: Sport and Exercise Psychology

Hometown: Pasadena, MD

Favorite Professor: Dr. Scott Barnicle. He keeps class interesting and cares a lot about his students.

Fun Fact: I am also a barista at Starbucks.

Hobbies: I enjoy exercising, playing video games and golfing.

Advice for Freshmen: Keep in mind that you get out whatever you put into college. If you want to succeed and graduate, you have to put in the time and effort with your studies. Go out, make new friends and have fun, but don't forget the real reason you are here.

Shayna Redford

Major: Biochemistry

Hometown: Woodbridge, VA

Favorite Professor: Dr. Stephanie Young. She is passionate about her field and includes relevant, interesting examples for all of her lectures. Overall, she made learning fun. I never wanted to skip her lecture, and she helped grow my love for biology.

Fun Fact: I grew up moving around every 2-3 years because my dad was in the military, so I have lived in different regions and countries.

Hobbies: Some of my hobbies include baking, hiking and playing cards.

Advice for Freshmen: Talk with your roommate and genuinely try to get to know them! You might not end up being the best of friends, but you still have to live together and at least an attempt at getting along can go a long way.

Portrait of Jamie Sullivan

Jamie Sullivan

Major: Environmental Geoscience

Hometown: Bowie, MD

Favorite Professor: Dr. Joe Lebold in the Geology department. He's lively, makes class fun, and he really works to get to know his students and for them to get to know him.

Fun Fact: I work at the only Olympic-size swimming pool in West Virginia. This is also where the WVU swim team competes and recently hosted a Big 12 event. Since working here, I have jumped off the highest diving board in the state which is 33 feet high.

Hobbies: I enjoy painting and cross-stitching, watching Netflix and paddle boarding/kayaking.

Advice for Freshmen: Get outside your comfort zone during your first year. I strongly recommend joining clubs or organizations even if you don't know anyone going in. I know it can be scary, but it is a great way to meet new people and make friends!
