What is the difference between in-state and out-of-state residency?

Residency

Students who are legal residents of West Virginia pay "resident" tuition at WVU; students who are residents of other states and nations pay "non-resident" tuition. We determine your residency by the information you provide on your admissions application.

To learn what is required to establish West Virginia residency, please refer to the Board of Governors Academics Rule 2.4 - Residency Status for Admission, Tuition, and Fee Purposes.

Reduced Tuition Programs

Some out-of-state students may qualify for in-state tuition through our reduced tuition programs for Ohio and Garrett College.
