Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Coaching Education (ACE)
Admission Requirements
The College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences uses the admission requirements of WVU. In addition, you must have a high school average of 2.0. High school graduates are required to present credit for four units of English, one unit of biology, three units of social studies, two units of college preparatory mathematics, one of which must be algebra, and eight units of electives.
Students must apply take Pre-ACE probationary courses, apply to the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, and meet requirements prior to being admitted into ACE courses. Admission is competitive.
Curriculum
The required courses in athletic coaching education are:
Completion of General Education Curriculum
GEC #1 ENGL 101 and 102 (6 hrs.)
GEC #2 MATH 121 or 126 (3 hrs); Science with lab—BIOL 101/103 (4 hrs.); CS 101 Intro to Computers (4 hrs)
GEC #3 Student’s Choice (3 hrs.)
GEC #4 CDFS 110 (3 hrs.)
GEC #5 Student’s Choice (3 hrs.)
GEC #6 UNIV 101 or SEP 170 (athletes only) (1 hr.) and SEP 272 (3 hrs.)
GEC #7 SEP 271 (3 hrs.)
GEC #8 Student’s Choice (3 hrs.)
GEC #9 Student’s Choice (3 hrs.)
Departmental Requirements:
ACE 100, 105, 106, 168, 256, 330, 368, 391, and 494;
SEP 271 and 272 (GEC #6 and #7).
EXPH 364 and 365;
Three 2-3 credit ACE coaching techniques courses;
PE 165 Conditioning and PE 164 Weight Training;
Four 1 credit PE activity courses;
ATTR 121;
CHPR 172 ;
SM 426,
ACE 491 Professional field experience (12 hrs.).Students also have an opportunity to earn concentrations in Group Fitness and Personal Fitness. Future concentrations will also include Strength and Conditioning and Aquatic Management (coming soon). All concentrations provide students with the training necessary to take national certification exams in the respective area.
