Skills

The gym-based programs, which pair movement vocabulary with movement concepts and actions, are synonymous with Family Fun!!   Children and parents (or grandparents) attend together to practice emerging skills and to spend very special play time  together.

Adding to the intergenerational fun are the WVU students who serve as helpers for the parents. All of the programs serve as instructional laboratories for students in a variety of disciplines, such as early childhood, child development, physical education, recreation, physical therapy, and special education. Skills programs also provide a unique opportunity for electrical and mechanical engineering students to apply their knowledge by designing and constructing play equipment that can be used for research and program enhancement.

"Kerry and Lora were great! My son has cerebral palsy and this class was as good as any PT or OT session he has ever had, as far as working on motor skills."

"Our son, Austin, is a happy, active child. He is all little boy and loves a chance to run, jump, and throw balls. He was very excited when we would get to the building because he knew that he was going to have fun. As a parent, I was pleased at the skills that were being taught. Austin is tall for his age but this class was a real benefit in improving his body movement skills. I was also pleased to watch him interact with children his age as well as all of the helpers. KinderSkills is a definite positive experience for Austin. He wants to come back for more!"
