Splash

These programs have a focus of body management and aquatic readiness.  This means that our Splash classes are not designed as traditional "learn-to-swim" programs. A parent or grandparent participates in the class with the child.

All activities are practiced in shallow, warm water so that even grown-ups who are uncomfortable in deep water can fully participate and enjoy the special memories they are creating with their child.

The curriculum is a modified version of our land-based Skills Programs, which pair movement vocabulary with movement concepts and actions.  Offering this same curriculum of fundamental movements in both the gym and pool allows for a unique comparison of task requirements by the child.

In addition to transferring the land-based movements like jumping, throwing, balance, and climbing to a liquid, the children also are introduced to pre-beginning swimming movements as well.  The learning environment is also unique, in that the climbing equipment, floating mats, balance beams, toys, and other play structures become the primary focus and challenge for the children.

The water becomes a secondary feature, or added bonus, to the play environment. The entire experience translates into Family Fun for everyone.

WVU students are involved in the classes as helpers for the parents. The students are from a variety of academic disciplines and are enrolled in classes that provide specific training for the Splash classes.  The students provide the parents added dimensions of safety, socialization, and assistance. At the same time, the WVU students are gaining valuable clinical experience with children in a community-based activity program.

"Ben started the Splash program at age 9 months and has attended every semester since-now 5 years old. He was initially very timid and unsure in the water but over time has come to be very comfortable in the water and is almost swimming. I believe the emphasis on having fun and enjoying time with his parents in the pool is responsible for this change in him. We all enjoy the KinderSplash class. It is our special time together. Thanks for a great program."

"As an only child, my daughter has benefited greatly by the socialization. We don’t have a program like this in our area. We have really enjoyed our experience and are planning to come again. What a great program to have here. Hopefully, you’ll be able to continue this program for years to come."
